Digital Mammography

Arlington, December 2010 – Sibley Medical Center is excited to be able to offer the advance technology of digital mammography to our patients. Due to the generous donation of $100,000 from the Sibley Medical Foundation we were able to purchase this state of the art equipment. The support of the Foundation has been instrumental in helping Sibley Medical Center to continue growing our services to help meet the healthcare needs of our patients.

Digital Mammography is the most advanced screening technology available to help detect cancers early when they are the most treatable. Digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer. The digital mammographic images obtained demonstrate amazing clarity.

In addition to allowing better cancer detection, digital mammography examination requires less compression of the breasts, hence is less painful than film mammography. Most importantly, digital mammography uses less radiation than film mammography, with no compromise in diagnostic accuracy.

The most effective ways to detect breast cancer at an early, treatable stage are to have a yearly mammogram starting at the age of 40 and to have a clinical breast exam by a doctor or nurse each year.
