Living with cancer is a challenge.  When first diagnosed, most persons feel a sense of shock, and are completely overwhelmed that they or someone close to them has cancer.  At every stage of the disease, there are new questions and decisions to make, along with the roller coaster ups and downs of emotions associated with this disease.  The oncology staff at Sibley Medical Center is available to help persons diagnosed with cancer to live with their disease.

As a member of our outreach medical staff team, Dr. Birendra Kumar, MD, Medical Oncologist specializes in the treatment and management of oncologic (cancer) and hematologic (blood) disorders. He is also a member of the Mankato clinic oncology and hematology medical staff. Dr. Kumar is available to see patients at the Sibley Medical Clinic in Arlington the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.

Dr. Kumar works closely with the oncology nursing staff at SMC to coordinate and provide cancer care and chemotherapy to persons with cancer.  The oncology nurse is a registered nurse with special training and expertise in cancer care.  The oncology nursing staff at the hospital acts as the coordinator of care, collaborating with other health team members to implement care and mobilize appropriate family and community resources.  The oncology nurse is available to work closely with cancer patients and their families, to provide information and educational material, and answer any questions.
