SMC Evaluates Facilities

Arlington, September 4, 2008 – Sibley Medical Center has hired St. Paul-based architectural firm BWBR to evaluate its facilities to ensure that it is able to meet the needs of patients, caregivers, and employees long into the future. The focus of this evaluation is on pre-design planning, a stage of the healthcare facility planning, design, and construction process that is frequently overlooked. Decisions made during this phase have the most impact on long-term operational costs. Detailed examples, guidelines, and case studies will lead the SMC Leadership Team through a proven pre-design planning process to understand the trends affecting space allocation and configuration, and learn techniques for planning flexible facilities. Health care facility planning is especially challenging because of the advances in design, construction, medicine and health care operations as well as population and service usage trends.

Before we make any changes in our facilities, we need to evaluate the needs of the people using our clinics and the employee environment,” explained Sibley Medical Center CEO/Administrator Rhonda Matz. “We want to understand the implications of historical, current and future developments in health care facility design to plan for growth.”
